Based on a popular PC dating game, the 2006 broadcast series Kanon is a remake of the 2002 program. High school student Yuichi Aizawa moves to snowy northern Japan to live with his cousin Noyuki, whom he hasn't seen in seven years. He doesn't remember much about the place, but he's willing to give it a try. Everything appears normal, but the placid surface conceals secrets the filmmakers only hint at. Yuichi discovers the town is populated with odd girls who remember him, although he has no memory of them. Amnesiac Makoto can recall she hates Yuichi; Ayu, who steals food from street vendors, latches onto him like a barnacle; aimless Shiori talks to him like a brother. Even the apparently normal Noyuki has quirks. Yuichi's past will undoubtedly become clearer as the plot develops and the relationships gel, but the story begins very slowly. Not many movies can take credit for bringing about the demise of a movie studio--but Michael Cimino's ego-driven, overblown Western is one of them. These days, its $40 million budget would barely cover the cost of an Adam Sandler film--but in 1981, it virtually put United Artists out of business. Cimino, fresh from an Oscar for The Deer Hunter, spent months assembling this ultimately gorgeous and confusing story of the Johnson County cattle wars of 1881, with a cast that included Kris Kristofferson, Jeff Bridges, John Hurt, Christopher Walken, Isabelle Huppert, and many more. Almost four hours in its original form, the film was cut to less than three for an abortive commercial release, then restored for video. Anyway you look at it, this is a mess better viewed as a curiosity than anything else. --Marshall Fine

DHADKAN (HEART BEAT), a romantic story from Dharmesh Darshan and featuring the long awaited return of music master Nadeem Shravan, revolves around Ram (Akshay Kumar), Anjall (Shilpa Shetty) and Dev (Sunll Shetty). Anjali is the daughter of a rich business tycoon Mr. Sehgal (Kiran Kumar). She is in love with Dev, a poor young man who is plagued by his illegitimacy. Unfortunately for them, Anjali's parents do not approve of the match and emotionally blackmail her into marrying a man of their choice. Anjali agrees with a guilty heart. This is when Ram comes into Anjali's life, a man of principals. Their marriage leads to a disastrous start when she refuses to acknowledge him as her husband. Ram treats Anjali's tantrums with utmost patience and respects her privacy. After withdrawing from the world for four years, 22-year-old hikikomori Tatsuhiro Sato gets caught on an emotional roller coaster as the outr comedy Welcome to the NHK concludes. He agrees to join his high school friend Hitomi on what he thinks is a trip to the beach, only to discover the members of an on-line suicide pact are olding a get-together. Sato's innate good nature helps to pull them back from the brink, but he's still agoraphobic, unemployed and broke. A get-rich-quick scheme involving Real Money Trading (selling imaginary items from on-line games) turns into an hilarious parody of "World of Warcraft"-style gaming, but it's a financial bust. A pyramid scheme touted by a former classmate proves equally disastrous. Sato and his next-door-neighbor Kaoru Yamazaki finally finish their "girl game," only to see it flop. Not surprisingly, Sato's relationship with the puzzling Misaki Nakahara turns out to be the key to his escape from his self-imposed isolation. The series builds to a surprisingly powerful conclusion that feels both satisfying and believable. There are no pat solutions to the problems Sato and Misaki face, but like two knickknacks that are chipped in the same place, they belong together. Together, they have a chance for a happier future. Chris Patton (Sato) and Stephanie Wittels (Misaki) give strong performances that make their characters' wrenching declarations as believable as their nutty rants. The mixture of broad comedy and powerful emotions in Welcome to the NHK will appeal to fans of His and Her Circumstances.
